What are those bruises on Michael Phelps?

    Acupuncture, Pain

Cupping is a ancient Chinese Medicine technique that has been practised for over 5000 years.  It uses cups either glass or plastic to produce a suction effect when placed on the body.  Suction is created by means of heat or suction device to cause local congestion creating these characteristic bruises that you see on some of the athletes in the Rio 2016 Olympics.

Cupping is used to stimulate blood circulation in local muscle areas and will also help to draw out toxins (such as lactic acid) out of the body.

Athletes can see a reduction in pain, enabling them to heal from muscle wear and tear quicker and allowing for smoother muscle recovery after intense practice sessions.
