Managing Pain with Acupuncture
The bulk of my practice is helping couples dealing with infertility, maintaining a healthy pregnancy as well as managing post-partum. The most common question I get is “can acupuncture help with other things?” the answer is yes! I would say that acupuncture is best known for its benefits on decreasing pain. Acupuncture and pain has been heavily researched and has proven to be beneficial in improving many different conditions. The World Health Organization (WHO) has recognized that acupuncture can be successful in treating over 30 different health concerns. Pain is debilitating, it can limit your range of motion, decrease energy, cause insomnia and generally decrease your ability to enjoy life. We’ve all experienced pain in one form or another, acupuncture is a natural and effective way to eliminate and manage pain. Here’s how it works. Acupuncture increases blood circulation to the site of the pain this increases the amount of white blood cells to the region of inflammation. The white blood cells (immune system) naturally decreases inflammation therefore decreasing pain. Acupuncture has little to no side effects and is safe.
Acupuncture can be the solution to your pain enabling you to move better and improve your quality of life. Acupuncture should be one of the first courses of treatment for pain but if you’ve tried everything, acupuncture can still help. These are just some of the common conditions we can help with.
Migraines and Headaches
Migraines can be debilitating! Ranging from a slight aura and pain, to nausea, vomiting and inability to tolerate light. Chinese medicine takes a look at the root cause of the migraines, determining if the cause is due to a blockage of flow to the head or due to the lack of nutrience within the body. Accompanying signs and symptoms will help determine the cause and decrease frequency and intensity of the migraines.
Headaches, we’ve all experienced them at some point in our lives. Headaches can be located anywhere along the head from the back of the neck and head to the top of the head, behind the eyes or the temples. The pain can be sharp, shooting, dull and achy or tingly. All of these factors help practitioners determine the cause of the headache and help prevent the onset by correcting the imbalance in your body.
Facial Pain and Bell’s Palsy
Sinusitis, trigeminal neuralgia, eye pain and bell’s palsy all fall into this category. Acupuncture needles placed around the face can help sinuses drain better, decrease inflammation on facial nerves decreasing pain as well as improve mobility of facial muscles as in the case of bell’s palsy.
Neck and Back pain
The spine is an essential part of our health and well-being. It helps us move and feel, it is our information highway allowing us to do everything that we do physically but also enabling our bodies to maintain its normal functions. We carry a lot of stress on our spine and more often than not we feel the aches of this stress on our backs. The stress of sitting at a computer or standing for long periods can cause a lot of muscle tension on our back and neck area, over long periods this can cause chronic neck and back pain. Acupuncture can be used to help decrease tension in the back muscles, improving blood flow through the muscles as well as the spine. Helping to treat and prevent acute and chronic back pain.
Premenstrual pain (PMS)
The monthly cycle can be quiet debilitating for some. Premenstrual symptoms can begin a week before a period begins and can include, breast distension, acne, abdominal cramps, headaches and migraines, irritability and moodiness, insomnia and much more. Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine can decrease and eliminate these symptoms allowing for a better menstrual flow, lessened PMS symptoms and better hormonal balance.
Repetitive Strain Injuries
Sitting in front of the computer all day, using the mouse, keypad and other technological devices has made way for repetitive strain injuries. Carpal tunnel syndrome, tennis elbow, golfers elbow are all injuries of the muscle that are overworked and overstrained. These muscles become inflamed restricting movement and causing pain. Acupuncture helps to promote more blood flow to these inflamed muscles sending white blood cells with it. This allows the body to naturally heal inflammation, restoring mobility and reducing pain.
Acupuncture is safe, natural and effective. If pain is ruling your life and you’ve tried everything give acupuncture a try. It can change your life.
