Recently, Health Quality Ontario (HQO), a health advisory branch that makes recommendations on health care funding endorsed publically funded psychotherapy. This endorsement is based on extensive research on mental health support and access to care, or lack thereof. The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care has yet to put their research into practice. HQO recommended that evidence-based therapeutic techniques such as CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) be covered for individuals who suffer with clinical depression and anxiety. They further stipulate that psychotherapy be provided by regulated healthcare professionals such as nurses, psychotherapists and social workers. Mental health support and care through psychotherapy is desperately needed and we have been waiting long enough.
Acutoronto has long held the position that mental health is a holistic component of well-being. We share a vision of a comprehensive interprofessional practice where our clients can access equitable and affordable care.
Time to fund psychotherapy now!
