Pediatrics and the New Mom
Children and infants have a totally unique energy system different from adults especially due to the fact that they are in a constant process of growth and development.
Acupuncture is not used on children until they are 7 years old which is when their meridians/energy system is fully developed. Therefore in infants, tuina (Chinese therapeutic massage) and Chinese herbal medicine is used as a safe and effective adjunctive therapy.
Due to the sensitivity of the energetics of children, during an acupuncture session, only 2-3 needles may be used without retention (quick insertion and removal).
Common ailments in children and infants effectively treated by Chinese medicine are:
Asthma
Anorexia
Attention Deficit Disorder – ADD
Bronchitis
Colic
Common Cold
Canker Sores
Convulsions
Diarrhea
Epilepsy
Enuresis
Flu

While this can be a very exciting time, it can also be difficult to adapt to changes that the body is undergoing. If you also have pre-existing injuries or ailments, these can be further aggravated. Acupuncture and Oriental medicine can be helpful in alleviating these symptoms and in ensuring that mother and baby maintain optimal health during this period.
