Syndrome X affecting Generation X?

Read about the syndrome that is affecting 1 in 4 people and increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

What is it?

Metabolic syndrome, also known as Syndrome X, is a combination of disorders that increase the risk of developing nditions - Acupuncture Toronto - Allergiescardiovascular disease and diabetes.  According to an article in the Canadian Journal of Diabetes, metabolic syndrome affects 1 in 4 people in Canada and its prevalence increases with age.  The definition of metabolic syndrome as defined by the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada includes the presence of three or more of the following risk factors:

  • Hypertension -  High blood pressure (> than or equal to 130/85 mmHg)
  • High Cholesterol - Elevated triglycerides levels (> than or equal to 1.7 mmol/L)
  • A low level of “good” cholesterol (HDL) – in men less than 1.0 mmol/L, in women less than 1.3 mmol/L
  • Pre-diabetes or Diabetes - High blood sugars (fasting glucose 6.2 to 7.0 mmol/L)
  • Obesity – Waist circumference of 102 cm (40 inches) or greater in men, 88 cm (35 inches) in women, having an ‘apple’ shaped body or belly fat

People with metabolic syndrome are at higher risk of having a heart attack, stroke and type 2 diabetes.  They tend to have higher levels of insulin and glucose in the body.  If the above risk factors are not controlled or effectively managed, the combination can lead to:

  • Damage to lining of arteries, a risk factor for heart disease and stroke
  • Changes in kidney’s ability to remove salt, resulting in high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke
  • Increase in triglyceride levels resulting in an increased risk for cardiovascular disease
  • Increased risk of blood clots, which may result in blocked arteries and may cause heart attacks and strokes
  • A decrease in insulin production which may result in the development of type 2 diabetes
